Agentic Commerce 2026: Mid-Year State of the Market
Hohen VenturesPublished12 min read
The primary reader of a commerce storefront is no longer reliably human. That fact is not a prediction. It is the condition the market has already entered, unevenly, with significant structural work still undone.
This update tracks where the shift stands now, where the gaps are widest, and what separates businesses absorbing agent-driven demand from those still optimizing for a buyer who has stepped back from the purchase loop.
The Two-Speed Reality
Discovery has moved to agents. Purchasing has not. The distance between those two facts defines the current moment.
Agent-driven visits to US retail sites grew roughly 4,700% year over year in 2025, per Adobe Analytics — off a low base, but growing faster than any other traffic channel. Consumers already delegate price comparison and shortlist assembly to AI. But only about 14% of US consumers trust an agent to place an order on their behalf without oversight. Agent-led discovery is operating at scale. Agent-led purchasing is not.

AI-driven sessions still represent under 0.2% of total ecommerce traffic — the growth is real, but it comes off a small base.

Two Ways of Thinking About AI
Einstein wanted to understand everything from the inside out. Bohr trusted what he could observe from the outside in. Their unfinished argument now sits at the center of how we govern autonomous AI: whether control comes from comprehending a system completely or from watching it closely and setting the right boundaries. The answer decides how much autonomy we can safely hand over, how wide the gap between intent and behavior grows, and why the future we're building needs both ways of knowing held in balance.
